In October, my phone rang with an Edmond Oklahoma caller ID. And since I love to get telemarketers all flustered, I answered expecting the proverbial – did you know you could save 15% blah blah blah. But no. The sweetest little voice announced, ”Hi. My name is Saundra and my husband and I have purchased a lot in Chapel Hill and you were referred to us by our REALTOR.” Later that evening her husband sent me copies of the floor plan they selected several years ago while planning for their retirement.
As I viewed the layouts and drawings, I thought to myself – great; a mountain style home. And in Chapel Hill at that. Wait… uh, will I ever get approvals in Chapel Hill for such a home? That was the $64 dollar question. I went from extreme excitement to this empty feeling of doubt.
I took a drive over to their lot and discovered a gem. What a perfect lot for such a home. After approvals we started construction and throughout the process, I simply could not believe that building lots like these were still around in Chapel Hill. The perfect building conditions for their retirement dream home. What a view!
While building this home, I incorporated Aging In Place principles such as three foot wide doorways, zero threshold entryways, grab bar blocking and ADA plumbing specifications. I am especially proud of the zero entry detail I designed. By lowering the floor joists into the foundation we were able to eliminate a step into the home.
Building a green home is fairly common and has become the new norm these days. However, I wanted to not only achieve a Certified Green Standard Certificate, I wanted to qualify for the Silver status Level. This home scored a 59 on the HERS Index. ENERGY STAR Qualified, Certified Silver by Home Innovation and more fresh air exchanges per hour than any prior built Collins Design-Build home, I am proud to offer to The Appalachia, one of the finalists worthy of the 2015 NCHBA STARS Award.
I recently posted a few photos of this home on Facebook and one person commented “Que the snow.”

His efforts in closing just under $6,000,000 in custom homes in a single year earned Chad the 2001 Builder of the Year award.
