For many families, pets are not just animals. They are members of the family.

When planning a home renovation, homeowners often spend months selecting finishes, planning layouts, and preparing budgets. One thing that is frequently overlooked is how the renovation will affect the four legged family members who call the house home.

While construction is exciting for people, it can be confusing and stressful for pets. Loud noises, unfamiliar people, changing routines, new smells, and rooms suddenly becoming off limits can all create anxiety. Fortunately, a little planning can make the experience much easier for everyone.

Remember, They Do Not Understand What Is Happening

Unlike us, your dog or cat has no idea that the renovation is temporary or that the finished space will be beautiful.

All they know is that strangers are entering their territory, loud tools are making unfamiliar sounds, furniture is moving, and their daily routine has suddenly changed.

Stress in pets can show itself in many ways including hiding, pacing, excessive barking, destructive behavior, loss of appetite, or even accidents inside the home.

Create a Safe Space

One of the best things you can do is designate a quiet room that remains free from construction activity.

Include familiar items such as:

• Their bed
• Favorite toys
• Fresh water
• Food
• A blanket that smells like home

This gives your pet a predictable place where they can relax while work is underway.

Keep Their Routine Consistent

Pets thrive on routine.

Try to maintain regular feeding times, walks, play sessions, and bedtime schedules even while the house feels chaotic.

The more normal their daily routine remains, the more secure they will feel.

Protect Them From Construction Hazards

Construction sites are fascinating to curious pets.

Unfortunately, they can also be dangerous.

Nails, screws, extension cords, sharp tools, exposed wiring, paint products, adhesives, sawdust, insulation, and open doors all present potential hazards.

Even the most well behaved dog or indoor cat can slip outside through a door left open by a contractor carrying materials.

Keeping pets separated from active work areas protects both your pet and the construction crew.

Think About Noise

Power tools can be frightening for many animals.

If possible, play soft music or use a white noise machine in your pet’s safe room to help mask construction sounds.

For particularly anxious pets, you may even consider spending the day with family, friends, doggy daycare, or your veterinarian if the renovation is especially extensive.
